Cheerful Heart Dental Mission 2012

For more information, please contact info@cheerfulheartdentalmission.org.

The Cheerful Heart Dental Mission travels to Restauración, Dominican Republic, located near the Haitian border, to provide acute dental care. The area is one of poorest in the country, with a monthly household income averaging between $35 and $80. While the area has a hospital, it is understaffed and ill-equipped with no running water and unreliable electricity.

Working closely with a local dentist, church pastor, and hospital director, medical professionals and supporters from the United States run the temporary clinic for the local Dominicans and Haitians. They perform extractions, fillings, restorations and prophylaxis cleanings; provide post-operative instructions and medicine; educate the people about dental care; and pass out toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Dedicated members and friends of the Community Church of Smoke Rise, with the support of University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey and William Paterson University, organized the dental clinic in 2011. They continue to raise money, gather supplies, and obtain necessary permissions in order to return each year.

The Dominican Republic is roughly the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola, with a population of 9 million people. One quarter of the population lives below the poverty level, most of them near the border of Haiti. Haiti occupies the the Western third of the island of Hispaniola. The border of the two countries is a rugged mountainous area. Most of this area has limited or no access to health care facilities, and no access to dental care.

The town of Restauración is located in the northwest section of the Dominican Republic, very close to the Haitian border. It is one of the poorest areas of the country. The monthly household income is between $35 and $80. The town has a small hospital, which is old and poorly equipped. There is no running water and electricity is only available a few hours each day. There is only one doctor and minimal support staff.

The village of Tilory in Haiti is even poorer. It is in the "forgotten" northeast area of Haiti. There is a small medical clinic there, but there are no dentists and no basic dental care. Most people do not even own a toothbrush. When emergencies arise, people travel many hours for care, if they have access to transportation.

The need for dental care in this area is enormous. Dental disease exacts a toll on children, affecting their development, school performance, and behavior. In extreme cases, dental disease can lead to more serious health complications, including disability and even death. The consequences of no dental care are mounting and they are preventable.

Members of the Community Church of Smoke Rise in Kinnelon, New Jersey, Dr. Pam Alberto and Dr. Jan Tracy led a second dental mission to Restauración, Dominican Republic and Tilory, Haiti. Along with other dental and medical personnel from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and William Paterson University, Dr. Alberto and Dr. Tracy treated over 300 needy people in three days.

Physician Dr. Art Sheppell accompanied the team to provide medical evaluations and supervise the distribution of medication. Greg Wroclawski provided technical support to make sure all equipment was constantly in good working order. John and Carol Cornwell, who championed the start of this mission and obtained all the necessary local government approvals, provided assistance as needed. Mirna Alonzo, a native of Dominican Republic, was the translator for the team.

Led by Pastor Luis Fragoso and his wife Frances Adames de Fragoso, members of the Free Methodist Church of Loma de Cabrera and World Vision Dominican Republic spread the news of the Dental Mission throughout the region. The congregation arranged transportation, scheduled appointments and provided lunches for the dental team.

Dental and nursing students who have been involved in this year and/or last year's mission include: Catherine Pamela Pichardo, Cindy Tatiana Moncada Ospina, David John Schnabel Jr, Gabriele Rosas, Kerisa Anna-Kay Harriott, Patricia Maria Dary, Mariela Ruiz, Dana Compton.
